This Paris-based newspaper was established already in 1789 and continued to be published until 1944. It was  influential among urban, intellectual and educated people. The director between 1884 and 1895 was Georges Patinot (1844-1895). During his tenure, the paper issued a morning and evening edition every day of the week.

In this evening edition we find an article under the category of ‘Actualités’, entitled ‘La taille humaine’ (the size/stature of the human body). It describes an article about a scientist by the name of Dr. Rahon[1] and his research into the height and weight of the human body. His research attempts to answer the question, whether the size of the human body has changed over the long period of human evolution.

After a general outline of the known facts about the evolution of the human body, the article quotes a Dr. Rahon’s comments on Rasmus Malling-Hansen’s research, which is mentioned with respect. The main thing to note is that French scientists during this period took Malling-Hansen’s research results seriously and placed him in the category of learned scholars and scientists. Dr Rahon is a good example of this.

    Un outre savant, M. Malling Hansen, s’est attaché à l’étude de l’accroisement de la taille chez les enfants. Il a établi qu’il y avait trois périodes distinctes d’accroisement, pendant l’année.

     Une période d’équilibre ou de repos relatif, de décembre en avril, une période d’accroisement maximum en taille, d’avril en juillet, correspondant à un minimum d’accroisement en poids; enfin, une période d’accroisement minimum en taille, correspondant à un maximum d’augmentation de poids, d’août en novembre.

     M.Hansen a fait ces constatations sur 72 garçons et 58 filles, placés dans un établissement, dont tous les élèves étaient soumis au même régime, ce qui ne pouvait donner que plus de valeur à cette expérimentation.
